The most common rodents getting into homes here in San Antonio Texas are the Roof Rat, Norway Rat, House Mouse, Texas Mouse, White-Ankled Mouse, Deer Mouse and the White-Footed Mouse.
Norway Rat as you can see by the picture is much larger than its counterpart the roof rat. The Norway Rats tail is about the same length as its body. The Norway Rat is widespread in Texas but not so common in the southern half of the state as the Roof Rat. The Norway Rat lives both as a commensal in close association with man and in the feral state, chiefly where vegetation is tall and rank and affords adequate protection. As a commensal the Norway Rat lives mostly in San Antonio basements, on the ground floor, or in burrows under sidewalks or outbuildings. Norway Rats appear to be most common about feed stores, chicken houses, and garbage dumps. Although more at home on the ground, these rats are adept at climbing and have been observed traveling along telephone wires from one building to another. They feed on a variety of items including animal and plant materials. Norway Rats are prolific breeders. They have a 21 – 23 day gestation period. They love to feed on bird seed and pet food left out over night.
Roof Rat as you can see by the picture is much smaller than the Norway Rat here in San Antonio. The Roof Rats tail is much longer than its body. he uses it to help guild him when swimming and for balance when running across wires and tree branches. The Roof Rat is more common in South Texas than the Norway Rat. Roof Rats are mostly commensal and live in close association with man. Roof rats can take up residency in places such as homes here in San Antonio, Grocery Stores, Poultry Houses, Feed Stores, Warehouses, Drug Stores, Grain Bins and Grain Warehouses. On farms Root Rats can be found in Barns and corn Cribs. Roof Rats will eat just about anything meats, grains and just about anything else that had nutritional value. Roof Rats breed throughout the year with a 21 day gestation period. Cutting back trees and not feeding you’re pets outside and removing bird feeder can all help when trying to keep roof rats away from you’re home. Putting up wire guards can also be very helpful.
